Speaker of Parliament, Rebecca Kadaga, has confirmed an incident in Parliament last week in which an office attendant was allegedly seriously injured by a parcel bomb that had been addressed to her.

Herman Kabogoza was last Thursday, according to sources at Parliament, admitted at Mulago Hospital after the explosion left him partially blind.

The parcel had been left at the parliamentary reception by a yet to be identified courier, with Kabogoza, picking it and opening it from the Speaker’s office.

“It is true, but the matter is under Police investigation” Kadaga told journalists at Parliament earlier today, pouring cold water on an incident that has seen Police detectives earnestly  swing into action.

The Kamuli woman MP was reticent about the whole issue as she tried to downplay the whole incident. “All leaders in this country are a potential target for such attacks,” Kadaga said when asked whether she was the target for the attack.

In light of terror threats, security around Parliament has been tightened, with a fully established Police station.

Police officers are always milling about in corridors of Parliament, while all entrances are fully manned with metal detectors and scanners.

Despite the heightened security, MPs Dr. Medard Bitekyerezo and Theodore Ssekikubo recently called for tighter security for MPs.
