BUSINESS came to a standstill in Kasese Municipality as thousands of people poured onto the streets to welcome the Uganda Cranes striker Yunus Ssentamu who hails from Kasese District.
Traffic was brought to standstill as people mainly those who used to play with or watched him during his formative years as well as local leaders led by the district woman MP Winfred Kiiza and Kasese municipality mayor Godfrey Kabyanga.
People gathered at Rwimi Bridge and the braved the heavy sunshine from 10am to 4pm to welcome Ssentamu back home from South Africa where he scored all three of Cranes’ goals at the tournament.
"We are proud as the people of Kasese because this is the first time we are represented on the national team," said Winfred Kiiza the Kasese District woman MP who led the people to Rwimi to welcome him.
Kiiza urged the district council to reserve funds to promote sports activities saying that Ssentamu who grew up in Katwe Kabatooro town council had proved that he could thrive at the national level.
Ssentamu who plays for vipers FC in the FUFA Super League has played for several local clubs in Kasese including Katwe FC, Kasese Youth and Sun City FC before he left for the Buikwe-based side.
In the remote town of Katwe Kabatoro town council people jubilated throughout the night in appreciation for Ssentamu.
"We are happy because we have been known for salt but now we are also known for producing the first ever footballer in the district to future for the national team," Jane Kabarangira the former district councilor for Katwe Kabatooro said.
