The Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) has initiated the procurement process for selection of contractors to maintain 48 selected roads across the country.

The publication of a bid notice on Tuesday marked the beginning of the process that should end in May with contract, if there are no administrative reviews.

In this arrangement, contractors maintain particular roads under contracts, which usually last between two or three years.

Some of the roads that will fall under this docket of term maintenance are Luwero-Kikyusa-Zirobwe, Kamuli-Kaliro, Mityana-Busunju, Paidha-Anyavu-Vura, Lyantonde-Kaliro-Ntuusi among others.

“These contracts are expected to commence next financial year 2014/15 starting June 2014,” Dan Alinange, UNRA’s head of corporate communications told the New Vision.

The road maintenance back-log is one of the biggest challenges that UNRA is grappling with despite the increase in funding for the roads sector this financial year.

“We still have over 8,000km of murram roads that were taken over from the districts where we have not been able to carry major works to upgrade them to national roads.

The current funding for road maintenance stands at sh270b while we need about 400b every FY to reduce on this backlog,” says Alinange.

He added that there is need for more funding to be able to deal with the backlog
