Uganda has lost nine soldiers in the ongoing conflict in South Sudan, Lt. Col. Paddy Ankunda, the UDPF spokesperson, has said.
According to Ankunda, the exchange between rebels and the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) has also injured twelve Ugandan soldiers.
“Let there be no speculation any more. Uganda has lost 9 soldiers and 12 injured in South Sudan since December 23, 2013,” Ankunda’s twitter handle states.
“The 9 UPDF soldiers died in a rebel ambush at Gemeza a week ago,” he added.
Ankunda also said that the UPDF would not stay long in South Sudan and that the talk that the rebels led by Riek Machar have re-captured Bor, which the government of South Sudan with the help of the UPDF, captured on Saturday last week, is “false”.
“UPDF not intent on staying for long in South Sudan. Talk of Bor recaptured by Riek rebels all false. Tens of rebels surrendered in Bor this morning,” he said.
Quoting the Chief of Defense Forces, Gen. Katumba-Wamala, Ankunda said that: “Let Riek Machar not use UPDF presence in South Sudan to snub dialogue.”
