Attorney General wants judge in Lukwago case out

The anticipated ruling on Erias Lukwago's petition for judicial review seeking to quash the proceedings of the tribunal which cleared way for his ouster aborted on Wednesday.   

This followed an application by the Attorney General to the Judge, Yasin Nyanzi; to disqualify himself from handling the matter any further saying he is biased.

The proceedings in which the Attorney General made the application were held in camera at the Judge's chambers at the High Court. However, after the closed hearing, journalists were called and briefed about what took place in the chambers by the Deputy Registrar, Taddeo Asiimwe on the orders of the Judge.

According to Asiimwe, the directive was to give the journalists the gist of what took place and not the details. He continued that the "Attorney General objected to the judge saying that he will not handle the matter impartially because of the earlier rulings he made in connected to the matter." 

Asiimwe said that according to the proceedings, Lukwago's lawyers objected to the application and the judge set his ruling on the application for January 24, 2014.
