Over 900 hundred candidates have missed a chance of joining the police force after failing to meet the set requirements.

The recruitment exercise for the cadet officers kicked off at Kibuli police training school on Monday for the central region.

The police force is to recruit 500 cadets and 3000 probation police constables.

Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), Kafeero Moses who headed the central recruitment team said that they registered over 1000 candidates during the two-day exercise.

Applicants for the cadet course are supposed to be between 18 and 30 years of age and must have a minimum qualification of a degree from a government recognized university.

Candidates   for the probation police constable are supposed to have attained minimum of a certificate in Uganda Advanced Certificate Education (UACE) or its equivalent.

Kafeero said that the candidates underwent physical and mental tests to check whether they can handle the work of police properly.

The recruitment will increase the number of police officers in the country to 46,500. The force needs at least 65,000 police officers to meet the UN standard of one police officer for every 500 people.
