Motorsport needs rehabilitation - Wavamunno

FEDERATION of Motorsport Clubs of Uganda (FMU) presidential candidate Jack Wavamunno reckons that sport needs to be rehabilitated. The polls are scheduled for February 1.

Wavamunno who issued his manifesto with a key message of ‘rehabilitating the sport in the short term and reconstructing the federation in the medium and long term’ argued that the sport cannot advance in its current state before restoring order.

Wavamunno, the founder FMU president, is contesting against former vice president Kisitu Mayanja, 10-time national motocross champion and Speedway Motorsport Club (SMOC) president Arthur Blick and former FMU treasurer Hamid Gombe.

Rehabilitation

According to his manifesto, Wavamunno intends to rehabilitate the sport in the short term by restoring cohesion amongst the stakeholders, repairing the public image of FMU, work with the relevant clubs and government departments to ensure safety in motorsport and run stakeholders (sponsors, competitors and fans) friendly calendars for rally and motorcycle events. 

Five-year reconstruction plan

He intends to explore closed road rallying options safety reasons, broaden the activities of the FMU by acquiring land for a karting circuit, deepen relationships with existing corporate sponsors and seek new sponsorships, training competitors through his international friends in motorsport and FIA, strengthening of the federation’s capacity through his local and international contacts in motorsport and business circles.

He also intends to lobby for more FIA supported projects and create motorsport archive.

“This is a challenging but achievable task, which will take leadership skills, commitment, hard work and self-sacrifice to achieve the above. Once achieved, we must preserve it for future generations, which is the reason for a motorsport archive,” Wavamunno argued.
