KAMPALA - Rebecca Nyandeng Garang has urged South Sudan president Salva Kiir to release the detainees in Juba so that the talks to end the war proceed.

She made the call in an interview with New Vision that was aired on Urban TV on Friday.

The imprisonment of 11 high ranking politicians is a major stumbling block in talks that have been ongoing in Addis Ababa since last week.

Rebels have repeatedly called for their release, while President Kiir has insisted they will not be set free without a legal process.

Rebecca Nyandeng Garang is visting Uganda and met president Yoweri Museveni  in Rwakitura on Thursday.

She told New Vision and Urban TV that the release of the detainees will speed the talks and end the war. She said former deputy President Riek Machar would have no excuse to continue fighting if Kiir released his colleagues.

The conflict in South Sudan began December 15 when Kiir's government claimed that soldiers loyal to his former deputy Machar, dismissed in July, launched an attempted coup.
