The permanent secretary of the ministry of defence, Rosette Byengoma has made a personal donation of an assortment of medical equipment worth millions to the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF).
On Thursday, Byengoma handed over the equipment to the Chief of Defence Forces, Gen. Katumba Wamala, during a brief function held at the Mbuya Army Barracks in Kampala.
The equipment includes 150 beds and mattresses with bedside cupboards, three operating tables, sterilizers, microscopes as well as blood pressure machines.
Present at the function were Brig. Dr. Ambrose Musinguzi, the director of medical services in the UPDF, Lt. Col. Dr. Stephen Kusasira, the UPDF HIV/AIDS programme coordinator and the army spokesperson, Lt. Col. Paddy Ankunda.
Byengoma said that the equipment was acquired through her own personal efforts when she approached a number of companies and individuals and mobilized them to donate to the armed forces.
Gen. Katumba Wamala hailed Byengoma’s donation and called on the public to be initiative and improve their plight, rather than always waiting for government’s intervention.
