Government to review varsity courses

Education minister Jessica Alupo has directed the National Council of Higher Education (NCHE) to review programmes offered by private universities so that quality education is guaranteed.

Education minister Jessica Alupo has directed the National Council of Higher Education (NCHE) to review programmes offered by private universities so that quality education is guaranteed.


Speaking during a site visit to Victoria University’s new premises on Kampala Road, Alupo noted that despite the Government liberalising education, it cannot compromise quality, adding that she had ordered NCHE to assess programmes of different universities.

“I have directed NCHE to review and assess the ongoing programmes of private universities from what they submitted while being licensed. This will give us a picture of what they offer and whether it is relevant,” she said on Tuesday.

The minister said the review is aimed at ensuring quality education to further assert the country’s position as an education hub in the region.

Alupo saluted the new proprietors of Victoria University for establishing it in the city centre, saying the location makes it easy for students especially, the working class to further their studies.

“I have seen such institutions in developed countries in cities. Now for Victoria University I am happy that they have met the requirements to operate,”  she added.

Victoria University Vice Chancellor Dr. Stephen Isabalija said the institution is committed to playing a role of providing practical education which will add value to society.

The university, which temporarily closed when its directors got problems with its international partners, was later taken over by city tycoon Sudhir Ruperelia. Victoria University-Uganda was established in 2011 by Edulink Holdings Limited, a private company.
