Lukwago, Kasibante denied permission to meet

Police have denied former mayor Erias Lukwago permission to hold a rally in Rubaga on Thursday.

Lukwago, together with Rubaga North MP Moses Kasibante had sought permission to hold a rally, but the Police rejected their request saying the rally is likely to cause a ‘breach of peace’.

Police spokesperson, Edith Nabakooba, said although the two politicians had formerly formally written permission as required by law, Police would not allow the meeting to go on.

Nabakooba explained that Lukwago was requesting to hold a meeting in capacity as Lord Mayor, a title which he legally does not hold. Lukwago was last year impeached by councilors.

“Accordingly, we have no option but to advice that Hon. Kasibante should not go ahead with the planned meeting as it is likely to cause a breach of peace. We advise, the general to public not to participant in tomorrow’s planned meeting as it is illegal,” the statement said.

She added that police recognizes the right of the politicians to hold consultative meeting in their constituencies but could not allow it to go because of its potential to cause unrest in the city.  She said the decision had been reached with advice of the Attorney General.

The latest development comes days after police refused to grant the former permission to hold a rally in St. Matia Mulumba church to consult voters on the way forward after he was impeached last year.
