UGANDA Christian University (UCU) female athlete Peace Proscovia is assured of three accolades at the 2013 Nile Special USPA Gala due in April.
Proscovia was nominated for the top award of the Nile Special USPA Sports Personality of the Year. She faces stiff challenge from the rally crew of Jas Mangat and Gihan De Silva and world marathon champion Stephen Kiprotich.
The nomination assures Proscovia of at least a second runners-up trophy of the top accolade. But she will already have carried away two trophies after the sports scribes in their monthly Nile Special/ USPA assembly voted her the netball and basketball player of the year at Lugogo Tennis Complex yesterday.
She was nominated for the top award because of her contribution on the national netball team in Malawi where Uganda finished third, and in Singapore where Uganda won the Six Nations Cup.
Proscovia also played a pivotal role as she helped UCU Lady Canons basketball team lift the national league title last year.
If she wins the Sports Personality of the Year award, she will be the fifth female to win the top award following the national netball team, the She Cranes (1988), Rosette Musoke (1993) and Catherine Webombesa (1997). The other women to have won the top award are former Commonwealth steeplechase champion Dorcus Inzikuru (2000, 2002 and 2005) and motor rally driver Suzan ‘Super Lady’ Muwonge (2011).
Meanwhile the She Cranes were voted the Sports Personality for the month of December after polling 495 points, beating men’s basketball league champions City Oilers (380) and the U-19 national women cricket team (330) into second and third place respectively.
