Muyingo asks doctors to stop being careless on duty

The state minister for Higher education, John Chrysostom Muyingo has called upon doctors to always demonstrate care and empathy while attending to patients.

“Whenever patients come to treat them, they see knight angels in you (doctors). This therefore, means that you need to have commitment and care in order to save their lives and not to destroy them,”Muyingo said.

Muyingo made the remarks  Friday while addressing graduates at the 5th graduation ceremony of Mulago School of nursing and midwifery at Mulago National Hospital.

He also challenged the institution’s board committee council and the principal to devise means of increasing the number of students admitted to the institute, stating that the country is in dire need of health workers yet there are few people in the profession.

“I would also like to encourage the parents of the graduates to come back and support the projects of the institution because this institution has a lot of projects but lacks funding.

Muyingo thanked the school management for the wonderful work done in giving quality education to the students and encouraged them to train more personnel to close the gap in the health sector.

“The personnel gap in the health sector is an opportunity for you to grab the many available jobs in the health sector,” Muyingo said.

The institute’s principal, Margaret Kidega, also challenged the graduates to use the skills they had acquired to help the needy in developing the country.

“Use the skills you have acquired from here to help those who need your services. I know the world out there is challenging but you need to be strategic,” said Kidega.

A total of 173 students graduated with diplomas in nursing, midwifery and Comprehensive nursing.

The function was also to remember Florence Nightingale who was a founder of the nursing profession globally that was started in 1856 after the First World War. She saw many injured people that didn’t have those to care for them and hence put decided to care for the injured.
