Vision Group will present a cheque of over sh100m to Stephen Kiprotich on December 12 as a reward for winning gold at the World Championships in Moscow.

Marathon runner Kiprotich, also Uganda’s first Olympic champion in 40 years, will be rewarded during a grand function at Vision Group headquarters.

Companies and individuals responded to a fundraising call by Vision Group to thank Kiprotich for his outstanding feat.

“We would like to thank those who contributed prize money in recognition of his win. We have been able to collect slightly over sh100m from the pledges that were made,” Vision Group’s Head of Marketing and Communications Susan Nsibirwa said.

Vision Group’s chief executive Robert Kabushenga launched the campaign immediately after Kiprotich raced to a gold medal in Moscow on August 17.

Back then, Kiprotich clocked 2:09:51, beating two Ethiopians to the finish line. Lelisa Desisa Benti came in second (2:10:12) and his fellow countryman Tadese Tola finished third with a time of 2:10:23.

Several companies and individuals responded to the fundraising call with cash offers.

Vision Group launched the drive with a ($10,000) sh26m offer. The other companies that joined the cause include MTN, StanChart, NSSF, Quality Chemicals, Crown Breverages, Sadolin Paints, Liverpool fans of Uganda, Corner House Family, CK Saloon, Drywood Safari, 256Bet.com, Global Institute of Technology and Focus Nursery and Primary School.

Brig. Muhoozi Kainerugaba and John Paul Kiffasi were among the individuals who supported the funds drive.

In August, President Yoweri Museveni treated Kiprotich to a Presidential feast at his country home in Rwakitura where he offered the athlete a brand new Mitsubishi Pajero and promised to build him a three bedroomed house.

Last year, a similar campaign in reward for Kiprotich’s gold at the Olympic Games, raised over sh300m.
