The minister of lands, housing and urban development, Daudi Migereko has asked residents of Kasokoso in Wakiso to embrace the re-development plans by National Housing and Constructions Company Limited (NHCC) in the area, saying it will not affect their stay on the land.

Speaking at the Land Awareness Week at Sheraton Hotel on Tuesday, Migereko said the planned development has no plans to evict any resident as it was portrayed some individuals.

“I ask our people to embrace this project because they are going to be beneficiaries. There are no plans to evict any one.

"This project is intended to improve the infrastructural development in the area without evictions. We only want our people to be helped to acquire better housing units,” he added.

Migereko said he was surprised to hear in the media that Government wanted to evict Kasokoso residents, saying it was misleading information.

He stressed that public awareness on a wide range land issues is necessary to ensure harmony amongst the many demands and actors at the centre of development.

He noted that there is the populists approach being pursued by some political and opinion leaders for their own interests thus leading to land conflicts.

“We need to preach optimum land use and meaningful transformation of our people’s lives and country to promote development,” Migereko added.

He said it is the Land Policy that now guides the country on matters of land ownership and land utilization in order to be able to transform the country into an industrialized nation with a developed service sector.

Migereko said the National Resistance Movement (NRM) has a duty to transform society at all costs.

“The talk that land belongs to ancestors is not good for development. We are going to continue engaging communities on government programs to understand their benefits,” he said.
