Government through the ministry of Gender, Labour and social development is to set up a productivity training center, for the people intending to be employed in the public service so as to boost the country’s productivity, economic growth and gross domestic product (GDP).

Mwesigwa Rukutana the Minister of State for Labor on Friday said that the poor mindset of Ugandans coupled with the poor education system has led to low economic production and productivity.

“The process is still at the formative stage and we are targeting fresh university graduates and other people who intend to work in the public service,” he said.

Besides, the move is also intended to curb the illegal export of labour to foreign countries like China, Japan, Malaysia, among others where Ugandans have found themselves in trouble due to employment in illicit activities like prostitution and drug trafficking,” he said.

Mwesigwa also blamed the low productivity of the country’s economy to the occupational safety and healthy related diseases and accidents, besides the poor mindset and attitude of Ugandans towards work.

According to Mwesigwa, the country loses about 0.8b US dollars annually due to injuries and accidents at work places and carelessness of Ugandans.

“Most people employed in the public service or private sector, spend a lot of time (8:00am to 5:00pm) in their offices doing nothing but wasting time on none issues. Their output is also poor and wanting,” he added.

This, according to Mwesigwa is because valuable working time is wasted on surfing social media sites like facebook, gossiping with friends instead of working to produce the expected output.
