A meeting convened by Kyambogo University Council with the striking staff and the Vice Chancellor Prof. Omolo Ndiege is underway at Mandela National Stadium, Namboole.

The Council is seeking to bring to an end a stand-off between the two parties and have staff resume work.

Kyambogo university spokesperson, Lawrence Madete, said today's (Friday) meeting is meant to settle all grumbles with a view of resuming work.

Police on Thursday fired tear gas canisters to disband students who were demonstrating against the decision of staff to continue shunning work.

The students were protesting against the incessant lack of lectures since Monday, arguing that they deserved to be taught since they had cleared all their dues to the university.

Carrying sticks and chanting in unison, "we want lectures now", thousands of students thronged the open area in front of Kyambogo's main Administration Block demanding to know why they were not being taught as end of semester exams near.

Since there wasn't any university official to respond to the queries of the angry students, Jinja road police boss Wesley Nganizi who has pitched camp at the university since Monday stepped in to address them.

The students' strike stemmed from a Wednesday general assembly of both teaching and non-teaching staff that ordered all staff to continue laying down their tools until Vice Chancellor Prof Isaiah Omolo quits Kyambogo University.

Prof Ndiege recently resumed office as ordered by Nakawa High Court but his efforts to retake charge of the university have hit a snag since the staff has fled the university vowing never to work with him on grounds that he is disrespectful and mismanages the University.
