14 arrested in Bushenyi armed with pangas

A total of fourteen suspected criminals suspected to have been waylaying people have been rounded up from different areas in Bushenyi district.

A total of fourteen suspected criminals suspected to have been waylaying people have been rounded up from different areas in Bushenyi district.

The suspects, including two ladies, were arrested during an operation that was manned by the Flying Squad which was deployed in the district on orders of the Inspector General of Police, Gen Kale Kayihura.

The deployment of Flying Squad in Bushenyi followed a wave of crime that has rocked the western district in recent weeks. The has been a wave of senseless crime where panga wielding thugs have hacked 8 people, killing two family members.

Charles Kataratambi, the commissioner of police commanding the Flying Squad identified the suspects as Naboth Muhereza, Godfrey Mugisha, Goerge Kasaija, Davis Nuwamanya, Byamukama Nasanaili, Twinamatsiko Joseph, Turyatunga Robert and Byaruhanga Frank.

Others are Namukasa, Jackline, Amutuhaire Rosette, Barekye Sylus, Kamukama Francis, and Richard Tumuhimbise. They were found in possession of pangas, axes and hammers.

ATM cards, a driving permit, and a voter’s card which had earlier been robbed from James Babigumira of Ishaka town were also recovered from the group. Babigumira was recently attacked and also lost two Nokia phones and sh300,000

“They were using the above weapons to harm whoever put up resistance before robbing them while some are hired to cut,” Kataratambi said. Parading the suspects, he described some of the suspects as habitual criminals.

“Some of them have recently been released from prison but they had started to regroup,” he said. He said the thugs have a network which extends up to Jinja.

Kataratambi said the thugs use Toyota Mark II vehicles to travel from one area to another. He said they will be charged with various offences including robbery and murder.

Kataratambi asked the public to remain calm saying there is something being done to restore peace in the area.

Meanwhile, during the operation, two vehicles were impounded after they were found to be transporting mairungi. The driver of a minibus, Robert Barinda, and the turnboy, Charles Kwesiga, were arrested.
