THE Bamasaaba cultural leader Sir Bob Mushikori has urged educational institutions in Bugisu sub-region to promote extra-curricular activities as one way of instilling discipline and patriotism among young people.

Mushikori made the call at his residence in Mbale town on Tuesday while flagging off a team of 16 boy and girl scouts from Nabumali Boarding Primary School who are representing Mbale district at the Uganda Scouts International Centenary Jamboree at Kaazi Camping Site in Wakiso district.

"Extra-curricular activities like sports and games at school help children to interact with others and develop the spirit of team work as the child grows up in society," Mushikori said.

The Umukuuka urged young people to take education seriously adding that society cannot achieve its development goals if its people are not educated in various professions.

In her remarks, the head teacher Beatrice Katami Wachaya said her school is representing the district in the Jamboree after emerging winners in the district scouts competition where six teams from five schools took part.

Wachaya who said Nabumali Boarding Primary School has excelled in scouting for the last 15 years, however, regretted to note that schools in Bugisu sub-region have not promoted scouting activities.
