Close to 650 applicants on Monday turned up for the Uganda prison services recruitment exercise at Tororo municipal gardens.

One of them was arrested and handed over to Tororo police on suspicion of being a Kenyan after submitting forged academic documents.

David Ahamisimbwe the acting commissioner of prison in charge of training and operations said the turn up was the biggest ever since they started the exercise.

Ahamisimbwe said the about half of the number was turned away after screening due to lack of proper documents and minimum academic requirements adding that  about 350 applicants underwent written interviews.

"Tororo being a border district, we have been so strict to avoid infiltration by foreigners. We wanted to be sure that we take only Ugandans and not Kenyans although most of them have Ugandan academic documents’’ he said.

He said they are going to use the census figures to determine the number of recruits slotted per particular district out of the whole total number required.

He added that the successful applicants will be called for training by the end of October.
