Sensitization before boda-boda registration

KAMPALA - Following Kampala Minister Frank Tumwebaze’s statement on the registration of boda-bodas (motorcycles) in the city, KCCA, together with Boda-boda 2010 leadership have come up with a joint committee to ease the registration exercise.

The committee headed by Kampala resident city commissioner, Samuel Mpimbaza Hashaka  comprises of Kitata Boda-boda 2010 patron, chairmen Ataanus Kafeero( Central), Joel Kibirge ( Lubaga), Joseph Sendazi ( Makindye), Deus Kananura ( Kawempe) and Rasid Kawawa( Nakawa ).

It will also consist of Kampala metropolitan police commander, Andrew Felix Kaweesi, Kampala metropolitan police traffic commander, Lawrence Nuwabine.

Others are KCCA officials Patrick Musoke, Julius Kabugo, Edson Masereka and Jeremy Magimbi and the five division town clerks.

During a meeting held at KCCA, the committee resolved that Boda-boda 2010 be recognized by KCCA as the dominant association which will be responsible for mobilizing others riders before the registration exercise takes place.

The committee resolved that the exercise of sensitization of the boda-bodas begins on Monday 16 September.

Committee head Mpimbaza said that before registration kicks off, a work plan should be developed upon which each party will be given a role and responsibility.

The team also resolved that sensitization ends on the October 5 and registration exercise is likely to begin on October 10.

 “We are likely to begin the registration on the 10th of October. But I have to give the minister (Frank Tumwebaze) the work plan which we have set,” Mpimbaza emphasized.

Minister Tumwebaze had set September 23 as the date for registration of commuter motorcyclists.

But during the meeting, the committee agreed that a lot of sensitization for the riders is needed before they embark on the registration.

Mpimbaza also said that after the registration of all boda-bodas in the city, the number of stages (points of operation) will be gazetted, zoning will be done and more training programmmes will be organized.

In their resolutions to KCCA, the commuter riders had earlier asked KCCA to recognize their association in all decisions concerning their industry.
