Nkurunziza served his country well - Govt

The Minister for Information and National Guidance Rose Namayanja has hailed Emmanuel Nkurunziza for serving the country diligently up to the time of his death.

The Minister for Information and National Guidance Rose Namayanja has hailed Emmanuel Nkurunziza for serving the country diligently up to the time of his death.

Namayanja, who was speaking at the requiem mass of the deceased at Christ the King in Kampala on Tuesday, said that even at the time of his death, Nkurunziza availed himself to those that needed his help.

“It is a sad moment for the country and the ministry but we are happy that you served your government well and we will emulate you,” Namayanja said.

Nkurunziza was the Assistant Commissioner for Information in the Office of the Prime Minister. “His discipline and hard work saw him rise through the ranks,” she added.

The late contributed to the Press and Journalistic Act of 1996, Electronic Media Act of 1998 and the Access to Information Act of 2005. He was also the Chief News Editor at Uganda Television (now UBC), and a Senior Member of the Presidential Press Unit.

Nkurunziza passed away at Kampala Hospital on Sunday where he was admitted after suffering from a stroke, Kidney failure and diabetes.

In 2010, Ventus Kwigenga, the deceased’s brother donated his kidney to the deceased. The operation was done successfully in India but however his health deteriorated when he got an accident that injured his spinal code.  

Speaking calmly, Bernard Kalasira Mukasa, the deceased’s only child, described his father as a good role model with a sense of humor. He said he was also serious about education but most of all, he enjoyed life.

“Even during the last minutes of his life, dad cracked jokes. He did not loose his spirit. I’m glad he died a spiritual man,” Kalasira said.

Nkurunziza attended Mutorere Primary School, Butobere High School, Kabalega high School and Makerere University.He will be laid to rest today at noon, at Kabuga village, Kyaahi Sub County in Kisoro district.
