A Total of 150 university students have been awarded the Muljibhai Madhvani Foundation scholarships this year.

This time round, the highest number of beneficiaries are coming from eastern Uganda, with 53, followed by central with 42, north 31, and western region 26 slots. The students will be doing various science-related courses in various universities countrywide.

“We have been impressed by the commitment to education shown by these students, despite the challenges they faced,” says Anthony Butele, the chairman of Madhvani scholarship committee.

The undergraduate and postgraduate students will benefit from the sh650m fund announced earlier this year as Madhvani celebrated 10 years.

The Madhvani Foundation was established in 1962 on the eve of Uganda independence to honour the vision of the founder of the Madhvani group, the late Muljibhai Prabhudas Madhvani. Since 2003 the trust has educated over 1,350 University students and provided scholarships worth over sh3b.

The scholarship is extended as a grant payable directly to the university on behalf of the beneficiaries.

Ski Iyengar, the Madhvani Board secretary says, the foundation has awarded 135 undergraduates and 17 postgraduates scholarships to students from across the country.

“Our analysis indicates an 11% increase in beneficiaries from eastern Uganda making them the highest recipients of this year’s awards than the western region which had more slots last year”.

According to Iyengar, male students have continued to dominate the scholarship list. “However, it should be noted that there is no formula to these results and the selection process was very transparent and no incidences of lobbying have been reported.”

Eligible courses are agriculture, biology, business administration, chemistry, actuarial science, architecture, veterinary medicine, commerce, law, hotel management, pharmacy, nursing, engineering, food science and technology, information technology, environment and medicine.
