Thunderbirds defeat Black Panthers 10-7 in the final to lift the inaugural national women 7s tournament title.

Thunderbirds women rugby team defeated their traditional rivals Black Panthers 10-7 in the final to lift the inaugural national women 7s tournament title at Legends Rugby club on Saturday.


Regina Athieno and Charlotte Mudoola scored a try and conversion respectively for Panthers while Christine Kizito and Asha Nakityo each scored a try for Thunderbirds.

To reach the final, the Kyadondo-based side (Thunderbirds) topped pool A while Legends-based side Black Panthers led pool B in the group stages.

Meanwhile the national women rugby team strength and conditioning coach Helen Buteme is impressed with the quality of players regional teams produced during the tournament.

Buteme told New Vision after the event on Saturday that the players from Busia, Mbale and Walukuba in Jinja were very good and suitable for the national team.

"I am impressed with the talent out there which we have to tap. These girls are good and actually Grace Auma and Brenda Namirembe will join the national team," she said.

The youthful players bagged all the top prizes that included top try scorer, most valuable player (MVP), golden boot and best kicker.

Auma (Walukuba Titans Jinja), Namirembe (Busia) and Apoya emerged tournament top try scorer, MVP and golden boot winners respectively.

Thunderbirds, Black Panthers (Kampala), Busia Red Rhinos (Busia), Entebbe Sharks (Wakiso), Graceland Panthers (Gulu), Kitgum Queens (Kitgum), Mbale Eagles (Mbale), (and Walukuba Titans (Jinja) are the teams that competed in the tournament.
