FRIDAY will be a public holiday, a day when Muslims are celebrating Eid al-Fitr after a month of fasting. This follows the sighting of the moon.

The Uganda Muslim Supreme Council (UMSC) confirmed the sighting in a statement. The festival is an important religious holiday celebrated by Muslims to mark the end of Ramadan, the Islamic holy month of fasting.

Before the day of Eid, during the last few days of Ramadan, each Muslim family gives a determined amount as a donation to the poor.

Below is the statement from UMSC

The Uganda Muslim Supreme Council Director of Sharia Sheikh Yahaya Ibrahim Kakungulu informs all Muslims in Uganda that the Moon has been sighted.

Eid-El-Fitri will therefore be celebrated tomorrow Friday 17th July 2015.

Sheikh Yahaya Kakungulu congratulates all Muslims upon fasting and successfully completing the Holy month of Ramadhan.

He wishes all Muslims a happy Eid-El-Fitri and urges them to celebrate in line with the Islamic teachings.

He also appeals to all those who fasted to pay Zakatul-Fitri before the Eid prayers and to fast the six days of Shawwal.

At the National Mosque – UMSC Headquarters Old Kampala, Eid-El-Fitri prayers will be observed at 9:00am and they will be led by His Eminence the Mufti of Uganda Sheikh Shaban Ramadhan Mubaje.

You are advised to come early and to park your vehicles outside the National Mosque perimeter as usual.

You are also requested to cooperate with security personnel because they are there for your own good.

Eid Mubarak
