POLICE has arrested the spokesperson of William Street, Masjid Noor Umar Bassica Kamoga suspected of involvement in the recent spate of murders targeting Muslim clerics across the country.

Umar Bassica Kamoga was arrested on Saturday from his shop on Ham Shopping Mall building near Nakivubo. He is reportedly being held at Kira Division Police post in Wakiso district.

Kamoga becomes the fourth high profile cleric from William Street Mosque to be arrested. The others are Hajji Kawunda, Abubaker Male and Hawa Kasujja.

The trio was arrested after police intercepted them as they were leaving Luzira Prison driving a private car.

Nine Muslim clerics have been murdered inside the last two years, with the latest being Sheikh Hassan Kirya who was shot on June 30 in Bweyogerere.

On Sunday, the District Amir of Kampala Sheikh Siraje Deen Mukiibi confirmed to New Vision that Kamoga had been arrested. He however said he is yet to get details of the arrest

"We have not been told why they were arrested," Mukiibi said.

Efforts to get a comment from Police spokesperson Fred Enanga were futile, as numerous phone calls to him went unanswered.
