Most shops in Mbale town remained closed Thursday morning as traders monitored the situation ahead of former Prime Minister, Amama Mbabazi’s visit.

Mbabazi set off to Mbale to hold consultations for his presidential bid but NRM supporters on Wednesday held a demonstration in Mable town to show their opposition.

There was a heavy Police deployment in Mbale town.

By 9:40am, most shops in Mbale town were still closed as tension and panic loomed among local businessmen and residents in the town council.

Subsequently, four streets in Mbale among them, Republic Street, Naboa Road, Court and Bishop Wasike Road that register the highest populations daily were abandoned.

Elgon Primary School on Naboa Road remained closed and no activity was seen.

Police on Wednesday dismissed as baseless reports that Mbabazi had been cleared to hold consultative meetings.

“We would wish to categorically state, that the police has no communication to that effect, and thus, its position over the intended meetings deemed unlawful still remains unchanged.

We also want to warn all radio and television licensees that there are established channels through which communication from the President's Office is disseminated and or verified, that is open to all media managers,” Police said in statement.
