Hailstorm ravages Mayuge

Over 100 people in Mayuge district were left homeless following heavy rain.

Over 100 people in Buwaya parish in Buwaya Sub County in Mayuge district were left homeless following heavy rain.  


The Wednesday evening hailstorm lasted for less than an hour.

The rain destroyed houses, plantations mainly bananas, maize, beans, cassava and a number of animals and poultry died.

Harriet Nampiina, a resident of Buwaya village is currently sheltering with her family of five at the neighbour’s place following the collapse of her semi- permanent house.

Nampiina narrated that the rain started when she was with some of her children in the house. “It blew off the roof but good enough none of was hurt,” she said.

Nelson Wandira, the former LC3 chairperson of Buwaya Sub County said that food crops were destroyed exposing their families to famine.

“We have lost all our food crops,” a worried Wandira said.

William Muwaya, a resident of Mawengere village said: “I don’ know what to do. I got an agricultural loan from Bugadde SACCO and spent it in rice growing but now all the rice has been destroyed,” he added that he also lost three cows and five goats.

Wandira appealed to the government to come to their rescue.

The most affected villages are Buwaya, Ntafungirwa, Mawengere and Buwaiswa.
