Twenty six Bamasaaba clan elders have today, Monday, elected a new Umukuuka (Cultural leader of the Bamasaaba or Bagisu).

Bob Mushikori emerged triumphant after garnering 28 Votes.

He was pitted in the contest against Manafwa LC5 Chairman Walimbwa Peke, 26 Votes; Professor Gimoi Kiboma, 10 Votes and Gregory Gidagui, 2 Votes.

Mushikori will now head the Inzu Ya Masaaba, the Bamasaaba Cultural establishment.

Mushikori was elected today afternoon at Bamasaaba Cultural Institution Headquarters in Malukhu (Lukhobo) near Mbale town.

Mushikori, a Ugandan born Canadian, replaces Wilson Wamimbi.

Mushikori hails from Bududa, Busayi and has been serving as cultural minister in charge of Diaspora in the Inzu Ya Masaaba.

He has also been the President for North American Masaaba Cultural Association.

The Umukuuka serves a non-renewable five-year term.

For one to be elected Umukuka, he must have been traditionally circumcised and must be married with grandchildren amongst other requirements.

John Musira, the outgoing Minister of Information in the Inzu ya Masaaba, says he is optimistic Mushikori's reign will be successful.

"Mushikori is a man with a strong track record. He has an international touch that will come in handy in developing Masaba land. He will however need a strong development oriented team and a strong cabinet to back him up in fostering his plans for Masaba land.

He should build on his predecessor's legacy. The election was free and fair and we thank all the other candidates who contested and have conceded. Bamasaaba everywhere should be proud and optimistic about this development," Musira said.
