Fifteen giraffes will on June 30 hit the road from Murchison Falls National Park in northern Uganda to Lake Mburo in western Uganda.

The giraffes were captured within the last two weeks and are being confined in a large enclosure also known as boma at Murchison Falls National Park.

“We are monitoring them and we expect them to leave for Lake Mburo in the coming week,” said Jossy Muhangi, the Public Relations Manager at the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA).

A team of UWA rangers and veterinary doctors with the support of Kenya Wildlife Services set out to capture 20 giraffes but ended up with 15.

“It would have been difficult to monitor the 15 giraffes with fresh ones so we decided to keep the catch of 15,” he told New Vision.

The relocation of 15 giraffes – also known as translocation – is being undertaken to restock Lake Mburo where giraffes were declared extinct in the 1960s.

The giraffes will also help to forage a weed, acacia hockii, which has been growing out of hand in recent years.
