All the burly bartender from Club Silk, Andrew Mwesige had to do was to get the right ingredients for his cocktail mix to become the master bartender of the night, an event in its second edition held at Sheraton Kampala Hotel last Monday evening.

Mwesige mixed the Whisky Sour cocktail that won him a cash prize of $1,000 (sh 2.5m) and an iPad tablet from Uganda Breweries Limited, the organisers of Master Bartender Academy programme.

He beat off competition from other bartenders from Dolphins Suites, Sheraton Kampala Hotel, Metropolitan Hotel and Bubbles O’Leary.

A cluster of guests drank from the variety of whiskies and spirits mixed by the bartenders and served by the Sheraton waitresses.  And they seemed to enjoy themselves.

To qualify, the organisers received applications from over 140 bartenders around the country who went through three stages in the four-day workshop before the finale night.

The first stage Module 101, involved training the competitors’ bartending skills like customer service, bartender secrets and responsible drinking.

Each bartender in that stage got a manual and a website link to complete the second stage known as Module 202.

We only hope the city bartenders who participated grasped those skills as we are tired of seeing them spill drinks on patrons and also do the wrong things at their bars.

Anyway, after the second stage that involved taking on online quizzes, the 25 who made it stormed the finale day where several tests on cocktail mixing and all were given to them until the judges decided on the final five.
