Govt, opposition leaders for UNAA convention

The countdown to the 2013 annual Ugandan North American Association convention is generating excitement and high expectations.

The countdown to the 2013 annual Ugandan North American Association convention is generating excitement and high expectations among the Ugandan community living in the United States.


The 25th annual UNAA convention, to be held from August 30 to September 1, 2013 in Dallas, Texas, USA, will be celebrated under the theme "Harnessing the power of the Diaspora."   

The chairman of the Dallas 2013 organizing committee, Brian Kwesiga told the New Vision in Dallas that this year's convention also marks the silver jubilee of UNAA, the largest organization of Ugandans living in the Diaspora, founded in Atlanta, Georgia, in 1988. Dallas last hosted the UNAA Convention 23 years ago in 1990.

Henrietta Nairuba Wamala, UNAA executive secretary told the New Vision on the phone from her base in Chicago, Illinois that the excitement about the Dallas 2013 UNAA convention from the Ugandans in the Diaspora is understandable. She said first president of UNAA, when it was founded 25 years ago, was engineer David Mureeba, a resident of Dallas, Texas.

A big number of political figures from Uganda is expected to grace the UNAA convention in Dallas include the Vice President, Edward Kiwanuka Ssekandi and the Speaker of Parliament Rebecca Kadaga, several ministers, Opposition leaders Maj. Gen Mugisha Muntu (FDC), Norbert Mao (DP), Dr. Olara Otunnu (UPC) as well as the chief Executive officer of KCCA Mrs. Jennifer Musisi, according to organizing committee chair, Brian Kwesiga, also deputy speaker of UNAA.

The head of the entertainment committee, Juliet Byandagara said a big group of Ugandan musicians are also lined-up to perform at the convention. They include Matthias Walukaga, a new thriller on the traditional Kadongo kamu scene in Uganda, Dr Phoebe Abe, a Ugandan born practitioner residing in the United Kingdom who performs music from Northern Uganda and Opio Tongweno who croons compositions from north- eastern Uganda. Other include Jackie Chandiru, Allan Ampaire aka Tonix, Emperor Orlando, among others.
