Reactions after Mrs Janet Museveni honours her pledge to her Ruhama constituency of serving only two terms as MP.

Uganda’s First Lady Janet Museveni has honoured her pledge to her Ruhama constituency of serving only two terms in parliament. New Vision talked to various leaders for their comments on her retirement.

National Youth MP Monicah Amoding (NRM)

That is excellent news. She has done her part. Even Captain Mike Mukula said he will not seek re-election. Leaders should learn not to overstay to pave way for the young people to takeover. Other elderly leaders should emulate her.

DP lawyer Jude Mbabali

I think she has done a wise decision. The First Lady has enough duties as wife to the President. She has also been serving in cabinet. That was too much work for her. She has saved us from the embarrassment. The President should emulate the wife and honour what he promised that he was coming back for the last term.

Youth MP for the western region Gerald Karuhanga (independent)

We welcome her decision. She has honoured her promise of not seeking re-election. Leaders should know when to serve and when to retire. We wish other leaders could pick a leaf from her. Even the Bible says in Ecclesiastes 3 that there is time for everything and a season set for every happening under the sun. We hope her husband will emulate her.

I think it is a timely decision given her age and responsibilities at home. She needs to rest. She wanted to demonstrate to other women that a woman can be a good leader and she has done it. Let it be a lesson to all of us that at a certain time we should retire.

I think it is noble for her to honour the promise she made. That is one of the measures of a person’s integrity. I think she is equally sending a message to her husband that he needs to rest. President Museveni should emulate her wife for his own good, the good of the country and democracy.

FDC spokesman John Kikonyogo

She has done a great move. Great leaders are those who serve for a limited period of time and pave way for others to takeover. That is why Nelson Mandela is a global hero. Even Jesus Christ accomplished his mission on earth for only three years and went back to heaven leaving his disciples in charge.

Veteran politician Israel Mayengo

She has given the lead. Other leaders should emulate her. Leaders should realize when they cannot go any higher than where they have reached and leave the stage in due course.

Youth minister Evelyn Anite

I have no comment on that.
