THE ongoing membership registration for the ruling party National Resistance Movement moves to the eastern region, Rodgers Mulindwa, head of media and public relations at NRM secretariat, has said.

Mulindwa told New Vision that registration in Central region and Kampala that commenced last Thursday ends Tuesday.

President Yoweri Museveni last month launched the countrywide exercise in Gulu, northern Uganda, ahead of the 2016 polls.

“The exercise went on well in northern and Karamoja regions, despite some hitches in Karamoja where it was reported that Amudat district LC5 chairman escaped with the register to Kenya. We directed our officials there to ignore that register and dispatched a new one,” said Mulindwa.

Mulindwa added that the secretariat has already dispatched four laptop computers to each district to help in the data collection.

He explained that data is currently being forwarded from village registrars to sub-county registrars who will in turn submit it to the district registrars and finally to the secretariat in Kampala.

From eastern region, the exercise will be concluded in western, according to Mulindwa.

NRM Secretary General, Justine Kasule Lumumba, during the launch in Gulu, said the party register is a databank of supporters that will inform the party of its support base in various parts of the country.

Lumumba registered President Museveni as the first NRM member.

Launching the registration, Museveni said the party has young and energetic loyalists at its secretariat to ensure that the registration exercise is not mismanaged. He urged supporters to register in their respective districts.

NRM opted to conduct fresh registration of members after the party register compiled ahead of 2011 general elections disappeared in the hands of the daughter of former party Secretary General Amama Mbabazi over payment disagreement.
