By the rooster’s crow last Sunday, the Mirinda Miss Teens scouts had already pitched camp at Parvatiben Muljibhai Madhvani Girls School (PMM) in Jinja to find the finest teenage girl from the eight schools that participated. Only three girls were needed to represent the region in the Mirinda Miss Teens grand finale on August 31, at Kati Kati grounds.

And yes, they got them. Media Ketayu from St. Noah Mawaggali won the day. The 18-year-old’s eloquence and confidence convinced the day’s judges, Urban TV’s Sophie Tattu, Vision Group’s Nigel Nassar and Radio One’s Yvonne Koreta.

Ketuya was trailed by PMM’s Martha Nafula Karungi and Njeru Secondary School’s Sylvia Kiden in the second and third positions respectively. She wins herself a one-year school fees scholarship, while her runners up take home a two and one full term scholarship from Mirinda.

The top three: Karungi (3rd), Ketayu (1st) and Kiden (2nd)

Like has been at the past school searches, when time for Miss Brainy came, we braced ourselves for some amusement. No offence to the participating girls, but teachers should seriously start getting us their best students. I mean, by the time you send a student who cannot answer which river is the longest in Africa, then someone is not doing their job right.

One girl stood before the judges and answered that the longest river in Uganda is “River Long.” Whatever that meant, but the grounds erupted in laughter, taking the already impassioned atmosphere to a new level.

Nakanyonyi Girls’ Sandra Akello won the Miss Brainy as Sharon Akello from PMM took home the Miss Entrepreneur’s crown. The latter had big competition, but her chasing pack just could not explain their business proposals. And you are left wondering how they even wrote the proposals in the first place.

Faiza Salima (PMM) was the designer of the day in the Miss Fashionista competition. Other schools that participated include Jinja Mordern Secondary School, Mpumudde High School, Good Heart Secondary and Jinja Senior secondary School.

It is at that  point host of the day, MC Talha, summoned Super Star Kids Grunade, 14, and Swangz Avenue’s Irene Ntale for some music before Baboon Forest’s Mun*G got on stage with his popular hits like Mbwase. Next stop is in Mbale this weekend.
