A Police traffic officer Helen Amenyo was knocked by speeding vehicle on Monday afternoon near Hotel Equatorial along Ben Kiwanuka Street, sustaining serious injuries including a fractured leg.

Addressing the press at the Central Police Station (CPS) in Kampala, the Kampala Metropolitan police spokesperson Patrick Onyango said Amenyo was knocked by a Toyota Nadia registration number UAU 442Q.

Onyango said the officer attached to CPS, was rushed to Mulago Hospital, and is in critical condition.

The motive was not established but driver of the motor vehicle has since vanished. He ran away from the scene, and the car was towed to CPS.

Onyango advised motorists to respect traffic officers, saying their service is very much needed to ease traffic flow on the roads.

“I urge all the drivers to be careful about traffic policemen doing their work and stop reckless driving,” said Onyango.

Onyango has classified the case as one of attempted murder. He said Police has since launched a manhunt for the driver, whose identity is still unknown.

In another incident, a bodaboda cyclist David Matovu was on Tuesday knocked dead by a motor vehicle registration number UAW 827S, driven a one Adam Jumba.

The incident occurred at about 10:30am at Zana, along Entebbe road. Jumba was detained at Kajjansi police post.

Later, he was transferred to Kiira Police station. Onyango said Police would prefer charges of murder and reckless driving.

The body was taken to the city mortuary for inspection.
