MASAKA - The eight districts that makeup greater Masaka are expecting a delegation of Chinese investors in mid-May to foster mutual relations and promote joint trade links.

The leaders of Masaka, Lwengo, Kalungu, Bukomansimbi, Lyantonde, Kalangala, Sembabule and Rakai through a regional development consortium have a partnership with the authorities in Yibin municipality in Sichuan province.

It was formed during the China-Africa Local Government cooperation forum that was held in Beijing in 2012.

The districts are for potential investors to spur development in greater Masaka.

Joseph Kalungi, the Masaka district LC5 chairperson who also chaired the consortium last week, said they need at least sh74m to host the delegation.

Each district is expected to raise sh5m and the balance is to be cleared by MPs from the region.

Kalungi said they are considering partnerships in the area of agricultural processing plants which they hope will provide employment to locals.

He said they have reserved a square mile piece of land – situated in Bukakata sub-county in Masaka district – for setting up an industrial park in anticipation of the partnership.

Kityamuweesi Musubire, the deputy principal private secretary to the Vice President, who is coordinating the visit, said the meet presents great opportunities for the area.

According to the program, the delegation is expected to spend three days in the country from May 13 to 15.

They  will hold a stakeholders meeting with the business community at in Lwengo district and sign a memorandum of understanding with the eight districts and with a climax of  the launch of Industry Park in Masaka.
