THOUSANDS on Saturday thronged Uganda Martyrs Shrine at Namugongo in Kampala to witness 77 couples exchange vows in a mass wedding organized by the Archbishop of Kampala Dr. Cyprian Kizito Lwanga.

Interestingly, the colorful ceremony that started with mass led by Lwanga, coincided with the International Family Day.

People from all walks of life including relatives and friends graced the occasion as witnesses to a moment when couples assumed a noble obligation under the holy sacrament of matrimony.

Amid ululations and cheers, the archbishop in his sermon also proposed that mass wedding should become an annual celebration for the Catholic Church in Uganda as a means to support unmarried couples due to lack of resources.

The couples came from 26 of the 63 parishes that form Kampala Archdiocese.

From time to time many of the pairs were seen pampering each other as though their relationships were just budding and whispering to themselves messages that seemed like sweet little nothings but expressions of love.

Archbishop Lwanga highlighted that, “mass weddings should not be looked at as ceremonies organized for the needy but rather cost saving functions that are meant to underscore the need to support couples to fulfill God’s wish.”
