The United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has hailed Uganda for its role in promoting peace and security in the Great Lakes region, and for the sacrifice made by Uganda’s troops in AMISOM.

Receiving Ambassador Richard Nduhuura’s credentials accrediting him as Uganda’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York, Ki-moon praised President Yoweri Museveni for his lead role in ensuring peace and security both in Somalia and Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

“Uganda and President Museveni’s great role played in bringing peace in Somalia and hosting the Congo peace talks is highly applauded by the UN,” Ki-Moon said at the UN headquarters in New York.

Ki-Moon emphasized the need for the international community to seize the opportunity to intensify efforts towards achievement of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) as the elaboration of the post-2015 development agenda gathers momentum.

Nduhuura, conveyed cordial greetings from President Museveni, and underscored Uganda’s commitment to strengthening further multilateral cooperation within the United Nations.

He commended Ki-moon for his personal commitment to strengthening the partnership between the United Nations and the African Union as well as sub-regional organizations.

He appreciated the Secretary-General’s efforts and the United Nations in supporting the initiatives of the International Conference of the Great Lakes Region which culminated in the signing of the Peace, Security and Cooperation Framework for the DRC and the region on February 24, 2013 in Addis Ababa.

He reiterated Uganda’s readiness to fulfill its obligations and commitments to address the situation through a comprehensive approach.

“African Union and Uganda in particular, valued your engagement and that of the United Nations in supporting the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) which continues to assist the Somali Government in stabilizing the country,” Nduhuura said, according to a press release from his office.

He stressed that the United Nations, working together with regional and sub-regional organizations, would continue to harness the opportunities for peace, security, and development and address the challenges facing individual countries, the region, the African continent and the wider international community.
