AIRTEL National Basketball League reigning men champions Kyambogo Warriors’ point guard Ivan Enabu, thinks it was a wise move to compete in the Gisembe Memorial Basketball tournament in Rwanda over the weekend.

“We had a chance to face the very best in the region before encountering them in the August Zone V clubs championships. The move was healthy for the team especially to these young stars,” Enabu explained yesterday after arriving in Kampala.

He further referred to the Kigali tournament as a great success as they met their targets; team bonding and exposure for the young players in the team. Warriors finished 3rd after beating Pool B’s second placed APR 60-46 in the third place playoffs.

Urunani of Burundi won the championship after a narrow 63-61 victory over Rwanda’s Espoir at the Amahoro Indoor Stadium.

Despite being a good experience overall, it came at a cost as 2009 MVP Ronnie Kasewu damaged soft tissues his upper right leg which will keep him out for some weeks.

Kasewu joins Collin Mukiza who dislocated his left shoulder on the sidelines.

League resumes

On Wednesday, the National Basketball League resumes with two games at YMCA, Wandegeya. Bottom Vegeterian who are still looking for their first win will host seventh placed KIU Titans.

Victoria University Heaters will face on-form and newly promoted side Charging Rhinos in the opening encounter of the day.

Rhinos has so far won two consecutive games; against Nkumba Marines and Miracle with the help of Raymond Lubega and Abel Omoding. The two posted 20 and 17 points respectively in their teams’ recent win over Miracle.

A Rhinos win will lift them to fourth position, while victory for Heaters will propel them to seventh.
