The old girls of Bweranyangi Girls Secondary School on Saturday handed a sh68m cheque to the school’s deputy head teacher, Joviet Mujuni, to fund the construction of a new dormitory.

The balance of sh30m cash was handed to the school administration last month.

The handover ceremony held under the auspices of Bweranyangi Old Girls Association (BWOGA) was held at Piato Restaurant in Kampala and was presided over by the new Security minister, Karooro Okurut, a former student of the prestigious girls’ school located in Bushenyi district, western Uganda.

“We are committed to see that our old school continues shining both academically an in holistic upbringing of the girl child. The money we are raising is meant to construct an additional dormitory to address the growing school population,” said Karooro.

“The school has been doing well academically and in shaping the girl child. Many parents entrust their children with the school because of the level of discipline and guidance provided to the students,” added Karooro.

The funds are an outcome of the fundraising drive that kicked off in November 2012 at Serena Hotel in Kampala during which sh15m was raised.

Karooro was the overall organizer of the Serena fundraising dinner that was graced by the First
Lady, Janet Museveni, as the chief guest. Another fundraising was conducted later at the school, raising sh70m.

According to BWOGA chairperson, Enid Twino, they expect to raise more funds from the uncollected pledges from the former students and well wishers. Twino congratulated Karooro upon her new appointment as the Security minister, saying the school’s star continues shining.

Other members present at the Saturday ceremony included Lindsay Kinkuhaire, BWOGA coordinator and treasurer; Christine Busingye, mobiliser; Hope Kasimbazi, Eva Mwenebirinda and Anita Zikusooka.

The 32-year-old association boasts of prominent members in Ugandan society including First Lady Janet Museveni, Security minister, Karooro Okurut, Jacquline Mbabazi, Susan Muhwezi, and Joan Kategaya.
