Maize flour worth over sh100m meant for students has reportedly been stolen from Makerere University’s milling stores.

The university discovered the theft on Wednesday after conducting a financial audit for the 2011/2012 academic year. The institution has filed a theft complaint at Makerere University police station.

The officer in charge of Makerere University Police station, Jackson Mucunguzi , told New Vision that the Police have already arrested Moses Twesigye, the University store keeper over the theft charges.

Mucunguzi said Twesigye who has been released on bond will be arraigned in court to answer charges of theft as soon as investigations are completed.

Mucunguzi, who did not want to divulge more details so as not to “jeopardize” investigations, added that more people are likely to be implicated in the theft of maize flour.

“We believe Twesigye may not have done it alone. He must have connived with some people,” he said.

Mucunguzi explained that the milling machine operator, Latif Muwolya who is believed to be involved has since fled adding that police was looking for him.

The university public relations officer, Ritah Namisango, declined to give a comment saying, “If the case has been taken to the police, then follow it up with the police. I am not allowed to speak about cases that are already at the police.”
