The Chief of Defense forces, General Katumba Wamala will not tolerate officers who undermine efforts to improve army welfare by diverting soldiers’ packages.

The new army boss said soldiers’ welfare is at the heart of the UPDF command.

“We shall be very angry with anybody who diverts soldiers’ welfare packages. Soldiers’ welfare is at our heart,” Katumba said.

Katumba was presiding over the handover ceremony of Major General David Muhoozi to Brigadier Gervasse Mugyenyi as the new commander of Air Defense in Nakasongola on Friday.

Muhoozi is the new commander of ground forces.

Katumba urged UPDF officers to get used to smooth and civilized handovers, saying that reshuffles are healthy.

“Each one of you should know that time will come for you to leave your post and go elsewhere,” Katumba said at the function which was attended by the top brass of  the Nakasongola based  air defense.

He said the main challenge of the UPDF was to build capacity to protect the country’s resources and borders.

He said  the country’s numerous achievements, including the recent discovery of oil, would be meaningless if  there is no capacity to protect them.

“If you have a good house that you can not protect it becomes useless,” he said.

Brigadier Mugyenyi said he was happy to return to Nakasongola and pledged to work with all officers.
