KAMPALA - Three students have been disqualified from the 2015 Makerere University guild presidential race that is due to kick off at Livingstone Hall on Friday.

This week, 11 students were nominated by the university’s electoral commission but the number has been reduced to eight after three were eliminated on the ground of having retakes.

Those that have been blocked from contesting are Bwiruka Bala David of Social Sciences, Law student Kayondo Latima and Seruuma Kenneth who is studying Engineering.

According to a letter from the office of the academic registrar, the trio is not on normal progress.

Okori Dennis, the publicist of the university’s electoral commission told New Vision that the three students have retakes, which makes them ineligible to stand.

“We have written letters to them informing them of the academic registrar’s decision.

“He blocked them from contesting on grounds of failure to meet requirements as per article 9(4B) in the constitution which says that nominees for the post of Guild President shall not have retakes,” he said.

Those that have been cleared to stand are Baguma Andrew, Bamwoya Tusiime Festus, Lubega Henry, Mukula George William, Mwine Musa (FDC), Namulindwa Stella (DP) Opoya Micheal and Ssentongo Ivan.

The qualified eight, according to Okori, are now free to start campaigns.
