35 schools for Joan Cox memorial volleyball tournament

Speaker of Parliament Rebecca Kadaga will be chief guest at the 3rd edition of the annual Joan Cox Memorial Volleyball tournament at Gayaza High School on Sunday.

Speaker of Parliament Rebecca Kadaga will be chief guest at the 3rd edition of the annual Joan Cox Memorial Volleyball tournament at Gayaza High School on Sunday.

Defending champion Kinaawa SS is among the over 35 schools expected to compete in the The two-day girls' tournament due February 21-22 is organized in memory of Miss Joan Carliell Cox who served as Headmistress from 1950-1972, and made invaluable contributions towards the education of the girl child in Uganda.

The Mirinda and Movit sponsored tournament was launched on Thursday at the school. It will have clubs and corporate teams playing alongside the under16 and the U-21girls.

The sponsors will provide T-shirts and jerseys, balls and gift hampers alongside some cash for trophies and certificates.

Addressing a press conference tournament director Ardone Kakungulu said the tournament will be played under the theme "Enhancing the girl child education through sports"

He said Trust High School, Iganga SS, Maryhill, Lubiri SS, Kinawa, Nabisunsa girls, Kings College Budo, Kyeizoba and Bweranyangi girls among others had confirmed participation.

DFCU who are defending champions of the corporate category are also expected alongside new entrants Crown Beverages and women league Volleyball champions Vision VC in the clubs category.

"There will be six pools in the schools category, two pools in the clubs category and the corporates might play round robin depending on the number of teams," Kakungulu said.

The tournament is open to only current school going children and officially transferred players for the clubs.

UVF second vice president Hadija Namanda and the school's deputy head teacher Annet Kabogozza Musoke hailed the late Joan Cox for her passion and inspiration towards the development of sports especially volleyball which she helped start at the school.

Mirinda brand executive Tracy Kakuru and Movit brand supervisor Amos Mugarura represented the sponsors at the launch.
