Former SC Villa and Bunamwaya midfielder Boban Zirintusa should continue praying to his God after surviving an armed robbery in Johannesburg last week.

The Polokwane City attacking midfielder, who has also had professional stints with Tanzania’s Mtibwa Sugar and Zimbabwe’s Dynamos, was attacked by armed and knife welding men as he returned to South Africa after a short holiday in Uganda.

On his way from Oliver Tambo International Airport to Polokwane, the 26 year-old was attacked by eight robbers who got away with all his belongings.

He was in the company of his friend Bashir Mayanja.

“We were attacked by eight guys with guns and knives. They robbed us everything that we had including phones. I lost all my contacts so you can inbox me. Thank God for saving us you will always be praised,” read a message on Zirintusa’s wall.

“I was robbed of everything from my phones, laptop, money, bags and all personal belongings that I had on me, except for the passport, which I had to literally beg these guys to give back. They threw it back at me as they ran away,” Zirintusa also told South African publication Kick-Off.

“I actually thought I was going to die because I have never had anyone point a gun or even a knife in my face. It was strange that even the people who were walking past me could not help.

“I was fortunate enough to be helped by a Good Samaritan who then gave me money to catch a taxi to Polokwane. I have heard about all the crime that goes on in Johannesburg but now that I have been a victim I understand it. Those robbers are heartless,” Zirintusa said.

In October last year, the captain and goalkeeper of South Africa’s national football team Senzo Meyiwa was shot dead while trying to protect his pop star girlfriend from suspected robbers.

Clubs battle for Massa

Meanwhile, University of Pretoria are struggling to keep Geoffrey Massa.

Massa — who packs arguably the most powerful shot in the PSL — is out of contract in June with his admirers silently licking their lips in anticipation of having him on a free transfer. The 28-year-old has scored seven goals in the league so far. He has been linked with Chiefs, Pirates and Sundowns.

Amatuks operations manager Graham Oosthuis stated: “You have to understand that with a special player like him there are a lot of dynamics involved so it is not so easy.”
