Shipping companies have called upon members of the East African Community (EAC) to speed up the process of setting up a single window system at the border points to increase efficiency for both importers and exporters.

The call was made by the managing director of MAERSK shipping line, Steve Felder at a break first meeting with importers and exporters at the Kampala Serena Hotel.

The single window system will allow customers to clear their goods through one window from where the other agencies can pick up documents that require their attention hence reducing on the long queues customers go through while clearing their goods.

According to Felder, customers have to lodge many documents with different organizations like port authorities, customs and shipping lines to clear their cargo.

“With the single window system in place, a customer can log on with his special reference and will be able to see the approvals that have been made at the same time  thus minimizing the interactions the customer has to go through to get the release of his cargo the same day,” explained Felder.

The single window system will take on cargo that mainly goes through the Mombasa Port.
