The chief executive of Stanbic bank, Philip Odera, has donated an emergence rescue boat to support mothers in Kalangala district to have access to medical facilities at the mainland.

Odera said that the people in the area approached them to support mothers who get difficulty during deliveries. He said as a bank they do not only deal on financial issues but have embarked to support the health issues. He added that they need a healthy population to concentrate on their work.

Odere handed over the boat to the community after a boat cruise on the lake at Lutoboka landing site in Kalangala.

The engine boat has two beds and life jackets. It has the capacity to carry up to 50 people. It also has a tarpaulin that shelters the people from rain and humid sun shine.

He pointed out that out of 84 islands in the district there are only 7 health centres under level two. He added that pregnant mothers during the 7th month are compelled to shift to the mainland or stay with relatives.

He noted that the health budget is quite small to serve the community. He called upon private partnerships to support this community.

He noted that how the boat is maintained will determine how much they will support the district in other areas.
