An Eighty-year-old woman has been arrested for allegedly hacking her in-law to death using a panga.

Thereza Nakanwagi a resident of Kisosso village in Kingo Sub County Lwengo district was arrested and handed over to the police in Kyabakuza trading center in Masaka municipality by her neighbors who saw her cutting Grace Namaganda’s head off on Tuesday afternoon.

Masaka district police commander, Geoffrey Kahebwa confirmed the arrest and said that investigations into the murder had already started. He commended the residents for handing over the old woman to the police than lynching her.

Suspected Killer: Thereza Nakanwagi

“That is the spirit which the police are always calling for,” Kahebwa said. “You assisted us to arrest the suspect and saving her life instead of giving us another task of investigating whoever may have lynched her if you had done so,” he added.

Eyewitnesses said that Nakanwagi followed Namaganda, 50, where she had gone to till her garden, pretended as if she was giving her a hand and turned against her and cut her twice by the neck killing her instantly.

“Nakanwagi went to the garden with a machete hidden in her clothes,” ten-year-old Julius Kazibwe told the police at the scene of crime.

“She then turned against me and tried to chase me but the other men got hold of her before reaching me,” Kazibwe added.

The residents also said that as Nakanwagi was being led to police, she bragged of having ‘finished’ Namaganda.
