After completing a Level 1 Certification Clinic last week, coaches attending the subsequent practical training camp believe they would have benefited a lot by the time it ends next Wednesday.

Fifteen coaches from the Uganda Swimming Federation and over ten elite swimming youngsters are attending the ten-day practical training camp facilitated by Senior FINA instructor Rick Powers.

The daily sessions are held at the magnificent Olympia swimming pool in Kikoni, Makerere.

Max Kanyerezi one of the participants said one of the benefits of the clinic is that the coaches and swimmers hear and learn why they are doing specific drills and are corrected on how to do it the best way unlike other theoretical clinics.

“The swimmers can now also comment and say how they feel after a specific drill and the instructor is able to correct and sharpen their skill there and then so it is very beneficial for both the coaches and swimmers because it is practical,” Kanyerezi said.

National team coach Muzafar Muwanguzi also welcomed the clinic saying it has provided them with a practical experience and was more beneficial than other theoretical sessions.

He said the swimmers had also benefited a lot from a more experienced coach and he had already seen a change in their technique from the tips they have got from the instructor.

Ibrahim Mapetra another national coach said they had learnt a lot from the instructor as the training caters for each and every swimmers’ individual need to make them improve on their particular weaknesses.

He said this kind of training was slightly different as there is a mixture of the fun element and hard components of training.

Rick Powers said it was important for the coaches to physically learn how to run a work out as they need to teach the swimmers  how to make the turns, how to time the swimmers, and what to do to make them excited during training among other things.

According to USF the clinic is very important because it will be the basis for recognition of USF Officials who will be required to apply to for inclusion on USF Officials List No. 1 2015 - 2016 which is valid for 2 years.
